ADVANCED CLEAN ENERGY STORAGE HUB

RENEWABLE ENERGY STORAGE HUB

Located in Delta, Utah, the Advanced Clean Energy Storage hub will be a large renewable energy storage facility. Capable of decarbonizing the western United States, the site will enable utility and industrial scale green hydrogen production from renewable energy sources and store the hydrogen in underground salt dome caverns to provide a huge reservoir of renewable fuel for power generation.

The first project to combine utility and industrial scale renewable hydrogen production, storage, and transmission, the Advanced Clean Energy Storage hub will support the Intermountain Power Agency’s (IPA) IPP Renewed Project—an 840 MW hydrogen-capable gas turbine combined cycle power plant that will initially run on a blend of 30% green hydrogen and 70% natural gas starting in 2025 and incrementally expanding to 100% green hydrogen by 2045. From this initial project, ACES Delta will deploy hydrogen hubs across the United States to accelerate and support the clean energy transition.

PROVIDING OVER 300 GWH OF
CLEAN ENERGY STORAGE

The Advanced Clean Energy Storage hub will initially be designed to convert over 220 MW of renewable energy to 100 metric tonnes per day of green hydrogen, which will then be stored in two massive salt caverns capable upon start up of storing more than 300 GWh of dispatchable clean energy.

A COMPLETE END-TO-END SOLUTION FOR CLEAN ENERGY

The Advanced Clean Energy Storage hub provides a complete end-to-end solution to produce, store, and convert renewable hydrogen to support carbon-free, year-round power for the western United States.

Convert GREEN HYDROGEN

The Advanced Clean Energy Storage hub will capture excess renewable energy, such as wind and solar, during off-peak hours to inexpensively power electrolyzers that convert water molecules to “green” hydrogen and oxygen. Representing one of the world’s largest orders for electrolysis equipment, the Advanced Clean Energy Storage hub will nearly double the global installed capacity for electrolysis.

STORE GREEN HYDROGEN

The hydrogen will be stored in two massive, subterranean salt caverns, each capable of storing 5,500 metric tonnes of working capacity. The salt cavern storage capacity will make it possible to store excess renewable energy produced in the spring when energy demand is low and use it to generate energy in the summer when demand is high.

DELIVER GREEN HYDROGEN

The Advanced Clean Energy Storage hub’s central Utah location can seamlessly integrate with the Western power grid and interstate gas transmission system. This project will serve as a green hydrogen gas and storage hub for the Western United States, delivering green hydrogen for the power generation, industrial, and transportation sectors.

GENERATE POWER FROM GREEN HYDROGEN

The stored green hydrogen will then be used to fuel hydrogen-capable gas turbine combined cycle power plants that will initially run on a blend of 30% green hydrogen and 70% natural gas starting in 2025 and incrementally expanding to 100% by 2045.

THE ECONOMIC BENEFITS

The development and operation of the Advanced Clean Energy Storage hub will provide significant economic benefits to the state and supporting regions.

GREEN HYDROGEN FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGES
THE WAY WE STORE ENERGY.

It would take more than 40,000 shipping containers of lithium-ion batteries to produce the equivalent megawatt-hours of energy that one hydrogen salt cavern can store. Just one of the salt caverns at the Advanced Clean Energy Storage site has the capacity to store the entire state of California’s monthly curtailed energy.

GREEN HYDROGEN AS A CARBON-FREE ENERGY SOURCE

The potential for hydrogen to serve as a source of carbon-free energy across a wide range of applications has generated significant attention, given decarbonization targets across the globe and the increasingly urgent need to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. Within this backdrop, Mitsubishi Power and Magnum Development retained Energy and Environmental Economics, Inc. (E3), an industry-leading consultancy, to evaluate the potential opportunities for hydrogen in the Western United States under a low-carbon future.

Helium

Renuve offers the ideal long-term storage solution for helium—its salt dome caverns. Because the helium molecule is small, it can only be stored for relatively short periods of time in most gaseous and liquid form containers. Renuve’s underground caverns provide large-scale highly impermeable “self-healing” leak-proof storage that lasts indefinitely. These caverns also limit the risk of contamination found in other geologic formations such as depleted reservoirs.

Renuve will build caverns to size for customers’ helium storage needs. Customers may transport helium to and from Renuve via gaseous jumbo tube trailers or liquid helium containers. Don’t let your helium take or pay investment float away. Store it with Renuve.

Compressed Air

Compressed air is another viable option for storing renewable energy.  This technology utilizes excess renewable energy to supply power to large compressors that inject compressed air into salt caverns for later deployment back into the generation of electric power when it is needed by the market.  This technology cannot store as much renewable power as green hydrogen, but has other site specific operational and market advantages.

Renewable Oxygen

Renewable oxygen produced as a by product of our green hydrogen electrolysis process is a relatively new and highly sustainable option in the overall industrial decarboniztion process.  Companies implementing their corporate, financing and customer sustainability are finding renewable oxygen a viable option.
